Mardi Gras originated in France and was then brought to North America in 1699 by explorer, Pierre le Moyne. Translated to English Mardi Gras means Fat Tuesday. This spectacular event takes place every March before Ash Wednesday. The tradition was originated for Catholics to get all prohibited food items out of their houses before lent began. Mardi Gras today is much different and far more elaborate than in the 1700’s but we still carry some of the same traditions started long ago. The colors that represent Mardi Gras have stayed the same; Purple representing justice, Green representing faith, and Gold representing power. These are the colors of the throws a.k.a. beads handed out during the parade and other events. Other fun happenings with this yearly celebration are King Cakes. Often there will be a hidden baby doll baked in to the cake and whoever receives this piece is responsible for providing the next round of sweets!Mardi Gras has now evolved in to an elaborate event that takes course over several days. People often take this opportunity to dress up in masquerade. Perhaps because originally this party was to take place before Ash Wednesday; which involved confessing all your sins, so a sense of anonymity is provided while in costume.
